Slaves and free men were available to do farm work. Some of their land was small to grow food, so they did not grow a lot of food from the ground. Sometimes wheat did not grow right at the same time. They did not grow a lot because they had to pay a lot of taxes. Fish and oysters were very popular. They ate a lot of fish and oysters. Plebeians were also hard workers. Plebeians baked, cooked meals, farmed, and a craftsmen. The emperor Augustus knew that they were going starving and he did nothing about it. The plebeians did not starve like the other people in Rome that starved. There was a shortage of food because there was to many people and all the fighting in Rome destroyed their farm. The cost of food was expensive and some Roman people could not afford it.
Dear Professor Sunding, My name is Katie and I am 7th grader Nagel Middle School in Cincinnati, Ohio. In my social studies class we are doing a project to determine we can use modern knowledge and information to solve the problems of Rome. My issue is Roman starvation. I discovered that many Romans were starving because of the many wars which destroyed the farmland and drove up the prices of food. I was wondering if you could possibly answer a few questions about how the economics of natural resources today works and policies that ensure there is enough food for an area.
1. How do farmers ensure that land is not destroyed by natural disasters and overuse?
2. What policies or regulations are used today to ensure we do not deplete our natural resources?
3. Do you think that starvation in the US today is linked to overuse of land?
